Why Denim Is Perfect for Coasters
Denim works especially well for coasters because:
- it’s thick and durable
- it protects surfaces from heat and moisture
- it looks better with texture and frayed edges
- it ages beautifully over time
These coasters are ideal for everyday use, coffee tables, desks, or even as small handmade gifts.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Old jeans
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
- Thread (matching or contrast)
- Pins or clips
- Iron
Optional (but recommended)
- Cotton fabric for backing
- Fusible interfacing or lightweight batting
- Denim needle (size 90/14)
Coaster Size
A classic and practical size for denim coasters is:
- 4″ x 4″ (10 x 10 cm)
or - 4.5″ x 4.5″ (11.5 x 11.5 cm)
Cut your fabric ½” (1.3 cm) larger on each side to allow for seam allowance.
Step 1: Prepare the Denim
Cut open the jeans and remove bulky seams.
Iron the denim flat so it’s easy to measure and cut.
Choose areas without thick stitching for a smoother finish.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
For each coaster, cut:
- one denim square for the front
- one backing square (cotton or denim)
- one square of interfacing or batting (optional, for structure)
Stack pieces neatly so all layers are aligned.
Step 3: Sew the Coaster
- Place the denim square on top, right side up.
- Layer the interfacing or batting underneath.
- Add the backing fabric at the bottom.
- Sew a square stitch ¼” to ⅜” from the edge.
This inner stitch line is important — it helps create the frayed look.
Step 4: Create the Frayed Edge
Using your fingers or a pin:
- gently pull out the horizontal threads along the edges
- stop before reaching the stitched line
The more you wash and use the coasters, the softer and more textured the edges will become.
Step 5: Press and Finish
Press the coasters with an iron.
Trim loose threads if needed.
Your denim coasters are now ready to use.
Optional Variations
- Use contrast stitching for a rustic look
- Mix light and dark denim in one set
- Add a simple tag or label
- Make round coasters instead of square
Sets of 4 or 6 work especially well as handmade gifts.
Tips for Sewing with Denim
- Use a slightly longer stitch length (3–3.5)
- Go slowly over thicker spots
- Pressing makes a big difference in the final look
