MATERIALS

✔ Air-dry clay (white or terracotta)
✔ Small rolling pin
✔ Acrylic paint or chalk paint (optional)
✔ Toothpick or texture tool
✔ Small knife or craft blade
✔ Clear sealer or matte varnish (optional)

HOW TO MAKE AIR-DRY CLAY CHRISTMAS TREES (Step-by-step)

1. Condition the clay

Knead for 1–2 minutes until soft.
This prevents cracking during drying.

2. Roll into a sheet

Roll the clay to ~0.5 cm thick.
Not too thin, not too thick.

3. Cut a triangle or cone

You can:

  • use a triangle cookie cutter, or
  • draw a triangle and cut with a knife, or
  • form a 3D cone with your hands

Imperfections make it more charming — it’s handmade.

4. Add texture (optional)

Use:

  • a lace doily
  • a piece of linen fabric
  • a rolling stamp
  • the tip of a pencil to create dots (Scandi look)

5. Shape into a cone

If you made the flat triangle shape, wrap the clay around itself and pinch the seam gently.

6. Let it dry

Leave on a flat surface for 24–48 hours, flipping once halfway through.

7. Paint or seal (optional)

For a matte ceramic look, use chalk paint.
For a high-end glossy finish, use a clear varnish.
